Blair County’s Altoona Curve
If you’ve ever experienced the fun-loving antics of LOCO, the Golden Locotami or 2025 Mascot Hall of Fame nominee, Al Tuna at a Curve Baseball game, maybe sent a bowling ball spinning down the lane to knock out some pins at Holiday Bowl, saw one of the up to 50 freight trains that have been known to travel through the Horseshoe Curve daily or taken in the natural beauty wandering around Canoe Creek State Park, you already know what a great place Blair County is. From things to do to the amazing history it holds.

Of course, there are also additional places and facts about the area that are a little less known but play an important role, even in our present day.

Canoe Creek Limestone Kilns
The Canoe Creek, Limestone Kilns are a great example. Even though the kilns have been abandoned for quite some time, the abundance of limestone in the area kept the Blair Limestone Company from the 20th century quite busy back in its day. The kilns operated on the property were used to produce fast lime for the supplies needed in support of the steel and iron industries.
Although limestone rich communities, like Blair County, have seen benefits over the years, there are some drawbacks to these properties when it comes to water quality. The plethora of limestone is known to be collected in groundwater as it travels through the earth. Although it sounds harmless enough, it can really create issues when it comes to large amounts causing what we call, hard water. Hard water is extremely problematic when it finds its way into your home or office. It affects plumbing and appliances as it can shorten their life expectancy and cause energy inefficiencies. You can also see a difference in how it feels when showering, the soap efficiency and cleaning supplies. Less lather forces you to use twice as much product in some cases which causes you to work harder and spend more in supplies.

Altoona Water Authority
It’s good to know about the water quality in your area. A great place to start for Blair County or more specifically, Altoona, PA, would be the Altoona Water Authority. We encourage you to find more details on the Water Quality Report and their continued dedication to bring you the most current data and keeping your water living up to the current standards in safety.
All types of water, whether from the tap or bottled, still have the possibility to carry unwanted contaminants in small quantities. To alleviate this, there are equipment solutions when it comes to softener systems and reverse osmosis that are considered to be the most effective as they remove up to 99.9% of these impurities.
Blair County Municipal Water
Municipal water can also be considered hard water in some places. In addition to sediment that can cause the problems mentioned earlier, some homeowners also look for options to remove the chlorine that is used to keep water safe from bacteria. This measure ensures those that receive their water from the township source will not be affected by any harmful microorganisms leaching into the supply. Once the water arrives at the home or business, however, the chlorine is no longer needed and can be removed to offer better quality and better tasting water throughout for family and guests.
